About Us
The Centre for Tantric Studies exists to further the scholarly investigation of tantric traditions. The University of Hamburg, with its outstanding culture of study in the fields of Indic philology, philosophy and religion, offers a superb environment for research in this field.
Aims
We are guided by the following objectives:
- to undertake rigorous, impartial, leading-edge research;
- to facilitate cooperation between specialists;
- to provide access to primary texts and other scholarly resources;
- to publish our findings in an open and timely manner.
Focus
Our focus is on research and teaching.
In order to understand the tantric traditions, it is essential to comprehend their original written authorities. We offer classes related to the study of these sources: on Sanskrit and other classical languages, and on the philological approach. We convene seminars and workshops led by experts.
We also endeavour to support new research by doctoral students and scholars who specialise in tantric studies.
People
The people affiliated with the Centre are teachers and students engaged in tantric studies at Hamburg.
An Advisory Board of professionals guides the Centre towards fulfilling its aims.
In addition, we receive visiting researchers in tantric studies, and we cordially invite contributions and expressions of interest from specialists in any part of the world.
Open Ressources
Our journal, Tantric Studies, publishes articles, reports and reviews from researchers working in this field.
We freely provide various digital resources, especially a growing online corpus of high-quality e-texts from tantric Śaivism and Buddhism.
Funding
The Centre’s research is subsidised both by various funding bodies and through private donation. We gratefully welcome and acknowledge support for our pioneering work.
