Edition and Translation of Jñānaśrī’s *Vajrayānāntadvayanirākaraṇa
Harunaga Isaacson, Taiken Kyuma 久間泰賢 (Mie University), and Ryūgen Tanemura 種村隆元 (Tokyo University) are working together on a critical edition and English translation of the rDo rje theg pa’i mtha’ gñis sel ba of Jñānaśrī.
The work, the Sanskrit original of which is lost, is a rare theoretical treatment of the superiority of tantric (mantranaya) to non-tantric (pāramitānaya) Mahāyāna Buddhism. As references to and quotations from it show, it was held in high regard by Tibetan scholars.
The critical edition is based on five editions of the bsTan ’gyur. It also takes into account the evidence of quotations from the work in the writings of Tibetan scholars. The introduction discusses i.a. the significance of this work, particularly with reference to attempts by tantric scholars to formulate the distinction between the mantranaya and thepāramitānaya, and the question of authorship.
Since 2003, this joint project has received support from the Mitsubishi Foundation and the Inamori Foundation, and a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) from JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science).
